We and so many people that we know are fascinated by the moose! Hubby and I worked as rangers at Baxter Park in Maine for five years. That is when our fascination with the mighty moose began. One of the first things that folks would ask as they checked in was “Where can we see a moose?”. Often times, the moose that they were looking for was just to the left of the outhouse and they never saw him until we pointed him out (that was sometimes after they had just used the outhouse). Baxter Park is a great place to sight a moose but there are many more places in the state of Maine where one can find this majestic animal. Hopefully, some day you will be able to find a moose but until then, we have a few to share with you......
what happens when a moose & a vehicle meet?
You can hope that if you are driving in your vehicle, that you will see the moose running down the road like this one did or somewhere in a field or the woods. However, if it is at night, moose are very hard to see. They have a very dark coat and their eyes do not shine like the eyes of a deer or some other mammals. Accidents involving cars and moose are fairly common in certain areas where folks live in and around the wooded areas. Moose and car accidents are likely to be catastrophic. Because a deer is so tall and heavy, its body can easily crush a car when the legs are knocked out from under it. Want to see what happens when a car and moose collide? Click HERE or on photo above.
what sound does a moose make?
Did you ever wonder what sound a moose makes? Will here it is and let me warn you, it is only pleasant to another moose. Click on the little green moose to the left to listen.
some moose facts...
The moose is the largest antlered animal in North America and the largest member of the deer family in the world. Its relatives include the elk, the caribou, the mule deer and the white-tailed deer. In North America, moose are found from coast to coast, from the Arctic tundra south into the northern United States. You may find a moose anywhere in Maine, but they are most abundant in northern, western and eastern counties.
Moose are definitely not the most beautiful animal in the forest but they are majestic and awe-inspiring all-the-same. When watching a moose in a bog, forest or deep snow, you see that with its thickset body, short neck and long legs and head, it is wonderfully adapted to its environment.
